Changes to the CRA’s Voluntary Disclosures Program
Mistakes happen. Even with the best intentions, it’s easy to overlook income, forget a detail, or make an error when filing your taxes. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) understands this, which is why it offers the Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP). Starting October 1, 2025, the CRA is updating the program to make it easier to understand and apply for.
The changes mean more people may qualify to use the program. For example, even if you’ve received an educational letter from the CRA about a possible issue, you may still be eligible. Depending on your situation, you may also be able to reduce penalties and cut back interest charges. The CRA has also worked to simplify the process by rewriting policies in plain language and moving applications online.
Correcting past mistakes through the VDP can bring peace of mind and prevent bigger issues down the road. However, navigating the rules, deadlines, and required information can still be complex. In many cases, the CRA may ask for several years of past information, such as foreign or Canadian income and GST/HST records.
If you think you might benefit from the VDP, the most important step is to speak with your CPA before taking any action. They can review your situation, guide you through the program, and make sure everything is handled correctly. Your CPA is also your first line of defence if the CRA reviews or audits your return.
